Client 

Heckington Windmill in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, as part of a £1.4 million heritage lottery regeneration scheme. It is the only working eight-sailed mill left in the world.

Application Function

Permeable surface solving surface water drainage on the site.

Project

The brief was to create a hard-standing, permeable surface suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and vehicles while solving surface water issues on the site. The spec included a layer of Tensar Triax TX160 Geogrid followed by TERRAM T1000 geotextile underneath a 300mm type 3 sub base. On top of this was another layer of TERRAM T1000 and a 50mm layer of locally-sourced 10mm angular gravel.

Pickwell Paving was appointed sub-contractors by the main contractor Newman Moore Ltd who were carrying out the work for the windmill committee.

Pickwell Paving, based in Lincolnshire, has been running since 1988 and was set up by Charles Pickwell. His son Lee, who has worked for the company since 2000, became a partner 5 years ago. The firm carries out hard landscaping and paving contracts in both the commercial and domestic markets. TERRAM products have been used by Pickwell for a number of years, namely TERRAM 1000 and more recently BODPAVE.

Solution

BODPAVE™85 plastic porous pavers were used on the entire frontage of Heckington Windmill and chosen due to its low carbon footprint, ease of installation and its ability to accept both vehicle and pedestrian traffic without gravel migration.

Result

BODPAVE™85 porous paving provided a cost-effective, sustainable, porous drainage system robust enough to support the weight of parked cars and stabilising the surface layer of architectural gravel.
