Geosynthetics are extremely effective in reinforcing unbound granular layers in roads and other trafficked areas such as car parks, railways, airports and docks. The use of geosynthetics in ground stabilisation allows the overall construction depth to be reduced. This saving on materials and excavation also provides safe working platforms which meet economic and environmental constraints.

Non woven geotextiles provide an effective solution to the problem of constructing stable granular layers over soft foundation soils. When a granular layer is constructed directly on a soft subgrade, the imposed loadings such as traffic may cause intermixing of the granular material with the soft subgrade. This results in a loss of bearing strength of the granular layer and premature failure of the structure.

Load Support
Terram Geocell system can solve many load support problems as it provides both a stable base for paved surfaces and surface stabilisation for unpaved areas. When filled with sands or granular fills, the cellular structure performs as a semi-rigid 'slab'distributing loads laterally, stabilising base materials, reducing sub grade contact pressures and minimising surface rutting. It also prevents the lateral displacement of infill and reduces vertical deflections even on low-strength sub grades.

Tree Root Protection
BS 5837: 2005 for trees in relation to construction and APN12

In recognition of the fact that trees are sensitive to disturbance the British Standards Institution has published recommendations on how to protect trees during development. In line with the earlier British Standard (BS 5837: 1991) the most recent guide, published in September 2005 (see further reading), recommends that there should be a 'root protection area' in which development should not be permitted.

In 2007 the Arboricultural Advisory and Information Service published Arboricultural Practice Note 12: Driveways Close to Trees (APN12) which suggested that driveways could be installed within the root protection area subject to roots and the soil not being damaged.

APN12 advised that driveways could be installed within the root protection zone provided that an above-ground, no-dig construction was used. This advice was incorporated into therecent British Standard which recommended that the most effective means of achieving this was through the use of a three-dimensional cellular confinement system, such as the Terram Geocell System.


Plastic Porous Paving

Porous pavers enable a free draining reinforced pavement that is SUDS source control compliant. Our pavers have been engineered to offer high load bearing capacities to deal with all types of traffic and frequency of use. Porous pavers are filled with permeable materials, either gravel or a rootzone for a grassed surface.

Grass Mesh / Engineered Turf

Terram provide solutions for reinforcing grass surfaces, providing a naturally draining reinforced and stabilised grassed surface. These reinforced grass surfaces are suitable for all types of traffic depending on the intensity of use. Our solutions include plastic meshes that are installed directly onto the existing grass surfaces which allow the grass sward to grow through the mesh apertures. The grass roots intertwine with the plastic mesh creating a reinforced based for the roots, protection from wear and ultimately a grassed surface that is capable of resisting a level of rutting and deformation caused by traffic. GrassProtecta™ grass reinforcement mesh is our market leading solution.

If an invisible surface structure is what is required, we provide a solution that incorporates plastic mesh elements blended in a rootzone which produces a very strong, yet free draining reinforced grassed surface.
