TERRAM helps establish new roots for BBC Children in Need project

11 December 2017

TERRAM is proud to have played a part in helping create this magnificient facility for Swansea young people’s charity.

The DIY SOS: Million Pound Build show was tasked with rebuilding a support centre and constructing temporary accommodation for users of The Roots Foundation Wales. TERRAM provided Geocells and geotextiles for the project to aid the good cause, which offers help and advice for South Wales’s children and young people in care and leaving care.

In its biggest single build to date, volunteers donating their time and skills had just 11 days to complete the work at the site in Ravenhill Road, demolishing the charity’s dilapidated hall, The Hut, and construct a new, spacious support centre from scratch. It included a large youth club space, therapy room and kitchen for cooking classes. It also provided the charity’s dedicated founder Emma Lewis and her team with new office space as well as several independent flats for charity’s clients.

To help the build, TERRAM donated a roll of standard geotextile T2000 4.5m x 100m, 2 panels of Geocell 25/15 5m x 7m, and 200 steel u-bar fixing pins.

TERRAM products “helped massively” because of the difficult conditions the team faced. The garden plant had to include a steep bank that also had to be planted, so a product was needed that would help sustain the  shape of the bank while allowing for planting.

In addition to this, they also had to use a product alongside aggregates to build a solid foundation for the rest of the garden area, partly to suppress weeds but also because the ground was so soft. Plus, a French drainage system had to be installed, which TERRAM was also used for.

Ms Lewis said: “Our new home will go on to help so many children and young people in care and leaving care now and in many years to come.

“Thank you to everyone who has volunteered time or materials, it means the world to The Roots Foundation Wales and the children and young people we support. It’s so heart-warming to know the local community, Wales and beyond came together to create our new home. We will cherish it.”

Pete Stevens, TERRAM solutions sales manager, said: “We were delighted to support such a good cause and wish The Roots Foundation Wales continued success with the vital work it does.”

The show, headed by Nick Knowles, aired recently as part of the BBC Children in Need Appeal week and is now available on BBC iPlayer.
